This new Hubble image - One among the largest ever produced with the Earth-orbiting observatory - shows gives the most detailed view so far of the entire Crab Nebula ever made. The Crab is arguably the single most interesting object, as well as one of the most studied, in all of astronomy. The image is the largest image ever taken with Hubble’s WFPC2 workhorse camera.Space 5
N90 is located in the wing of the Small Magellanic Cloud, in the constellation of Tucana, approximately 200,000 light-years away from the Earth. Its proximity makes it an exceptional laboratory to perform in-depth studies of star formation processes and their evolution in an environment close to that in the early Universe. Dwarf galaxies such as the Small Magellanic Cloud, with small numbers of stars compared to our own Milky Way, are considered to be the primitive building blocks of larger galaxies. The study of star formation within this dwarf galaxy is particularly interesting to astronomers because its primitive nature means that it lacks a large percentage of the heavier elements that are forged in successive generations of stars through nuclear fusion.Hubble creates 3-D map of 'Dark Matter'
Dark matter is an invisible form of matter that accounts for most of the universe's mass, and according to the researchers, the map provides the best evidence yet that normal matter, largely in the form of galaxies, accumulates along the densest concentrations of dark matter. According to the research team, the map, which stretches halfway back to the beginning of the universe, shows how dark matter has grown increasingly "clumpy" as it collapsed under gravity.
It also reveals a loose network of filaments that grew over time and intersected in massive structures at the locations of clusters of galaxies, the researchers said.
Richard Massey and Nick Scoville from the California Institute of Technology, who presented the findings at the 209th meeting of the American Astronomical Society in Seattle, Washington, said the 3-D map was a milestone, that would help astronomers take the study of dark matter in the universe from the level of "inference to direct observation".
Previous studies of dark matter were based largely on numerical simulations of the expected evolution of large-scale structure, whereas this study showed that evolution was driven by the gravitational attraction of dark matter, they said.
According to the two, the new maps of dark matter and galaxies will also provide critical observational underpinnings to future theories for how structure formed in the evolving universe under the relentless pull of gravity.
"It's reassuring how well our map confirms the standard theories for structure formation." said Massey.
"Dark matter is the 'scaffolding' inside of which stars and galaxies have been assembled over billions of years. Theories suggest the universe transitioned from a smooth distribution of matter into a sponge-like structure of long filaments. Mapping dark matter's distribution in space and time is fundamental to understanding how galaxies grew and clustered over billions of years," he said.
"Tracing the growth of clustering in the dark matter may eventually also shed light on dark energy, a repulsive form of gravity that influences how dark matter clumps," he added.
For creating the map, Hubble photographed 575 slightly overlapping views of the universe using the Advanced Camera for Surveys' (ACS) Wide Field Camera onboard the telescope.
The European Southern Observatory's Very Large Telescope in Chile, and the Subaru telescope in Hawaii obtained a further 1000 hours of observations of thousands of galaxies' spectra.
Finally, a study of the hot gas in the densest galaxy clusters was imaged in X-rays by the ESA's XMM-Newton telescope and the distances accurately determined through their spectral redshifts to arrive at the map.

This is a cats eye Nebula in space. Three thousand light-years away, the Cat's Eye Nebula, a dying star throws off shells of glowing gas. This image from the Hubble Space Telescope reveals the nebula to be one of the most complex planetary nebulae known. In fact, the features seen in the Cat's Eye are so complex that astronomers suspect the bright central object may actually be a binary star system.Thursday, January 11, 2007

Parthenon - temple of Athena Parthenos , Greek goddess of wisdom, on the Acropolis in Athens. The Parthenon was built in the 5th century BC, and despite the enormous damage it has sustained over the centuries, it still communicates the ideals of order and harmony for which Greek architecture is known.Architecture in ancient Greece:

Heracles
Offsetting his strength was a noticeable lack of intelligence or wisdom. Once when he became too hot he pulled his bow out and threaten to shoot the sun. This coupled with strong emotions in one so powerful frequently got Heracles in trouble. While his friend and cousin Theseus ruled Athens, Heracles had trouble ruling himself. His pride was easily offended. He took up grudges easily and never forgot them. His appetites for food, wine, and women were as massive as his strength. Many of Heracles great deeds occurred while doing penance for stupid acts done in anger or carelessness.
It would be easy to view Heracles as a muscle bound buffoon. Indeed, many of the comic Greek playwrights used him this way. Even among serious critics he was often seen as a primitive, brutal, and violent. There is much to support this view. His chosen weapon was a massive club. His customary garment a lion skin, head still attached. He impiously wounded some of the gods. He threatened Apollo priestess at Delphi when a answer to his questions was not forthcoming. He created most of his own problems.
However, Heracles as simply a macho buffoon is unfair. If he held grudges, he would also do anything to help a friend. Once his anger passed he was the most critical judge of his own actions. He was too strong for anyone to force a punishment on him. That he willing did severe penance shows a fundamental sense of justice. During his punishments he shows patience, fortitude and endurance that are as heroic as his strength. Terrible things happen to him because of Hera's hatred, a hatred that he is not responsible for. That he perseveres through it all is a moral victory beyond simple strength.
The view of Heracles shifted considerable over time. The early view focused on how badly he managed despite his obvious gifts. As time passed the focus shifted to his virtues. The Romans valued him highly as he best fit their idea of a hero. He eventually had a fair sized cult that worshiped him as a god.
Minos
Hera a Greek god
Hera's marriage was founded in strife with Zeus and continued in strife. Zeus courted her unsuccesfully. He then turned to trickery, changing himself into disheveled cuckoo. Hera feeling sorry for the bird held it to her breast to warm it. Zues then resumed his normal form and taking advantage of the suprise he gained, raped her. She then married him to cover her shame.
Once when Zeus was being partcularly overbearing to the other gods, Hera convinced them to join in a revolt. Her part in the revolt was to drug Zeus, and in this she was successful. The gods then bound the sleeping Zeus to a couch taking care to tie many knots. This done they began to quarrel over the next step. Briaerus overheard the arguements. Still full of gratitude to Zeus, Briareus slipped in and was able to quickly untie the many knots. Zeus sprang from the couch and grapped up his thuderbolt. The gods fell to their knees begging and pleading for mercy. He seized Hera and hung her from the sky with gold chains. She wept in pain all night but, none of the others dared to interfere. Her weeping kept Zeus up and the next morning he agreed to release her if she would swear never to rebel again. She had little choice but, to agree. While she never again rebeled, she often intrigued against Zeus's plans and she was often able to outwit him.
Most stories concerning Hera have to do with her jealous revenge for Zeus's infidelities. Her sacred animals are the cow and the Peacock. Her favorite city is Argos.

The four humours
The four humours were body liquids blood, phlegm, yellow bile and black bile. These were connected to the four seasons.
Yellow bile= summer
black bile= autumn
phlegm= winter
blood= spring.
Hippocrates said if someone had a fever in spring then they had too much blood and they had to 'Bleed' the patient.

Famous Greeks
Aristotle Discovered many things in science . He wrote books about physics, poetry, zoology, polotics and governments. His dad was the personal doctor of the King of Macedonia. When Aristotle was 17 he went to study in Athens with Plato.
Parmenides watched an eclipse of the moon in approximately 470 BC and found out that the shadow of the earth was curved. He therfore found out that the earth was round and not flat.
Archimedes He was a mathematician and an engineer. He made the Archimidean screw which could make water go up hill. He found out that both silver and gold weigh the same.
Pythagoras He also was a mathematician.
Alexander the Great He was born in Macedonia and was a organiser and a general. He was called 'the great' because he conquered more places than any one else and he became the ruler of Greece.
Ancient Greece timeline
Athens becomes a very pawerful city and controls an empire in 450 BC. Greeks defeat persian in battle in 480 BC and 490 BC.

Greek food
On some islands goat is enjoyed more even though it takes longer to cook.
Fournos means both bakehouse and oven. The bakers oven used to be shared by everyone in the community. Most Greek bread is a cream colour. The usual shape is large and round and is cut into thick slices.
In Greece the herb Basil is used on religious occasions. Men wear the leaves in their hat bands when they go to church on Stavros day ( the day of the Cross) on 14th September. A sprig is offered to any visitors as a sign of welcome and friendship.
Some Greek honey has a nutty flavour. Some smell and taste of wild thyme or citrus blossom. Others smell of chestnut blossom. Honey is often drizzled over Greek yoghurt.
